Tips on Choosing the Right Burial Option in New Jersey

For families dealing with the death of a loved one, deciding on the best burial option is a tough decision to make. In New Jersey alone, there are an estimated2,000cemeteries, including religious, municipal, veterans, and private family cemeteries.Expand that by the various burial options, consider their location, cost, cultural significance, and so on. With that in mind, Memorial properties has been helping families navigate the death of loved ones since 1985 and we’re still here to aid you during the process, every step of the way.

Consider Your Different Burial Options

Memorial properties currently offers in-ground burial, above-ground burial, and cremation options at our 11 locations, spanning five counties in NJ. WeserveEssex, Mercer, Monmouth, Middlesex, and Ocean County. Our goal is to work with your family and satisfy their specific needs.

Mausoleums

Mausoleums are an alternative to in-ground burial and store the remains of family members in a cool, dry place. They can be either community, meaning that multiple people (related or not) will be interred in the same burial space, or private, meaning that the person’s remains will be interred alone. Either way, families will be able to reflect on the lives of their loved ones in a comfortable setting. The burial process for mausoleums is similar to that of an in-ground burial. Typically, the family will hold a traditional funeral with transportation to the mausoleum site and interment to follow. The mausoleum may be accessible or closed, depending on the design chosen by the family. They are a good option for families who do not wish to hold in-ground burials.

Pricing for mausoleums depends on the type chosen. The most expensive is the private family mausoleum, which can be small enough to fit one couple or large enough to fit all members of the immediate family.

Columbariums

A columbarium, also known as a niche unit, is a permanent structure with spaces, or niches, that hold the cremated remains of loved ones. The spaces are laid out in rows and columns and the person whose remains are interred are sectioned by name or location number. The number of spaces in columbariums can vary from dozens to hundreds. They can be personalized with pictures and memories of the person whose remains it contains. The standard size of these spaces are meant to hold one urn, coming to be about 9 cubic inches.

Columbariums are typically made with stone, concrete, granite, marble, or brick and are lined with glass, bronze, and granite. While most are on cemetery grounds, columbariums can be either indoors or outdoors. Choosing an indoor columbarium allows the memorial site to be climate controlled; you can visit your loved one all year round regardless of the weather. Outdoor columbariums are usually decorated with walking paths and benches. Some common examples of columbariums include towers, walls, and other freestanding structures. Pricing can range anywhere from $30,000 to $100,000 but depends on the size, capacity, location, design, and customization that you choose

Single Burial Lot

Considered to be the most common type of plot in a cemetery, a single burial lot is a cemetery space that holds the remains of one person in a casket. They are designed to accommodate one casket and its surrounding grave lines or burial vaults. Single burial lots are ideal for couples or immediate family members.

Single burial lots typically measure 8’ x 3’, but can be larger or smaller. While it typically ranges from $2,500 to $7,500, the price of the lot will vary depending on the amount of lots you buy and the size; the larger the plot the higher the price.

Family Lot

Family lots accommodate multiple burials within the same family. They can be purchased as a single large lot or a group of adjoining single lots. The price and sizes of these lots will vary depending on the number of potential burials you wish to purchase. Family burial lots typically cost anywhere between $10,000 and $30,000 but some cemeteries may have a maximum number of burials within the lot.

For those who choose to purchase a family lot, there is the option to customize the space for multiple burials. Some choose to havedouble depthburial, which is when two caskets are buried one on top of the other in the same grave space. Many people do this when they bury couples or when they only want to purchase one grave space. Each family member can have their own small headstone or there can be a large one for the entire family.

Vaults

Vaults are sealed containers that hold and protect the casket from dirt and water from getting in and from any damage that can be caused by heavy machinery. They are lined with durable material, such as bricks or stone, that acts as an outer shell for the casket. Not to be confused with burial or grave lines, which only cover the top of the casket, a burial vault is lined on all four sides of the casket and offers total protection. The price of the vault will vary depending on the manufacturer, size, materials used, and customization points.

Consider What Factors are Important to You

Location

Location can affect the accessibility of visiting the grave. Making sure that the burial site is at a prime location for direct family members keeps the emotional connection to the passed loved one alive and allows the family to visit and decorate the grave on a regular basis. Moreover, certain grave sites have cultural significance, which can become a crucial factor in choosing where to hold the burial. Memorial properties has 11 cemetery and mausoleum locations across New Jersey:

Mercer County

Middlesex County

Ocean County

While you want to hold a memorial to remember your loved one in the most honorable way, the costs of doing so can quickly add up. Burials tend to be more expensive as you increase the size of the plot and the customization of the casket, vault, mausoleum, etc.

Memorial properties will satisfy the needs and wants of your family at every step of the way.

Culture

DIfferentcultureshave different preferred burial methods. For example, cremations are prohibited for Muslims and certain members of conservative Jewish communities. They associate cremation with a destruction of the sacred vessel that is the human body. Most Hindus, however, are cremated as a way to move from the mortal realm to that of the gods. Roman Catholicism prefers traditional burial over cremation, but has permitted since 1963. InAsiancultures, the higher the grave the better; ideally Chinese cemeteries are situated on a hillside. There are a variety of cultural factors that go into choosing a burial option, Memorial Properties will work with your family, keeping these factors in mind.
